Pinaki Barua was born in Kolkata 1954. He graduated with a bachelors and masters degree from the Kala Bhavana,Visva Bharati University in Santiniketan 1978 and 1980. He is presently working as a Professor in Printmaking in the teaching faculty in this institution. He has exhibited throughout India in group and solo shows. He has also exhibited in the international arena. Barua’s prints are stunningly expressive, and the impact comes alone from his masterful handling of his medium. The effects he brings out through his etched surfaces exude crispness and density. For him, the quality of expression mainly lies in the technical possibilities of the medium itself, which, if handled carefully can give rise to amazing variations in textures. He controls the degree of local acid bites over his plates to such an extent that the surface captures the nuanced detail in the subject matter, in this case the topographical vision of a landscape. The cracks and swells of the surface mimic the texture of a land at a distance, and the course of flowing lines capture the contours of nature. His use of color is judicious and helps to give a localized and intimate feeling to his work. His figurative works also form a part of his oeuvre, where he evokes the psychological states of being through portraying textured bodies, moving in a dense interior or exterior space. Signs and metaphors connect and meld with the characters and the situational environment in a masterful way creating an effect which is all embracing and aesthetically enjoyable but difficult to describe in words.
Pinaki lives and works in Santiniketan.
