Rupa Rani Jha

Rupa was born 5th February 1982 in Bihar. She completed her Bachelors degree in 2008 from the Kala-Bhavan, Visva Bharati in Santiniketan and undertook her Masters from the same university.

Her works are derived from the subtle changes in the social condition of women of rural ad urban middle class society. Within her work she incorporates the use of traditional folk imagery and at the same time modern contemporary art practices.

Rupa says of her work:

“I have tried to portray in my work how one adapts to a particular life style and the influence of folk and tradition on contemporary art practices. I was brought up in two very contrasting societies, one of which is highly traditional with folk art being a part and parcel of life -Madhubani in Bihar; and the other, the modern indutrial steel city - Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.  I have been influenced by both of these places, directly or indirectly these environments have always been shaping my thoughts. The varied rural context and the materialistic city life have carved a deep impact on me which I try to portray in my paintings.

In most of my works, I have tried to explore and link the past and contemporary art practices, the subtle development and changes linking history to the present. The fine lines, organic and floral motifs in the space stem from folk art, whereas modern mechanical images - are extracted from social text. Apart from the forms and imagery, color has also been an important part of my works from the earthen to jazzy hues. I've tried to fuse these contrasts and create a balance, as one depends on the other to give vent and support. This approach gives me the freedom to explore and develop my painting. Simultaneously, fusing both together, I’ve tried to highlight the prominence and importance of folk art forms even in contemporary times.
Thus through my works I've tried to bridge the gap between traditional art  and modern art practices  by showcasing both in a common space which is the canvas . The tradition - our past - is deeply rooted in each artist and it is a source of inspiration which is manifested in the artistic work. On it's own each form has a unique and deep impact, together they create a new visual language which I've tried to explore and would like to continue to explore and enhance further".
