For Sanatan Saha art is a creative journey opening itself into an infinite visual space gleaming with memories, images, colors and spaces. These images are entirely personal yet universal owing to their aesthetic promise and poignant qualities.
Generally speaking, Sanatan Saha’s paintings convey a luminous pictorial world replete with innumerable images emerging from various layers of the painted surface. These layers perhaps correspond to our layered existence and memories of past as well as present. What apparently seems to be a journey down the memory lane is actually a very tangible reality for Sanatan. He is born and brought up in a distant Bengal village and he still finds himself deeply rooted to his rural background. His training in an art institution like Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan both as a graduate and post-graduate student has further enriched him in terms of what more possibly art could offer circumventing the typical trends. Sanatan, an artist honest to his instincts, has evaded all idiosyncratic flights of the imagination, expressionistic excesses and narrative trappings.
Thus his canvasses are neither nostalgic tales nor ventures into a world of fantasy nor are they indifferent pictorial statements. They are deep organic spaces where images evolve, as it were, continually from the painted layers which in turn swathe the images in transparent color sheaths. This play of burrowing out the existential layers and getting them enveloped by thin films of daily exigencies is what Sanatan wants to make us feel through his art. The plethora of images that seemingly drift along the surface are mostly fugitive in temperament, and they are here only to get submerged in the inevitable layers in the next moment. The profile or frontal face often occupying the canvas centrally with an iconic presence is a vital cue that clearly says that Sanatan’s engagement with his art is not an objective one. He does not do the digging with a tool. It is his self that plunges deep into his canvas later emerging out with a face smeared with fragments of images sparkling like precious gems. Constraints and pressures of what Sanatan feels as unavoidable only make these images of past and present rare and thus radiant.
Sanatan lives and works in Santiniketan. |
