Sanjoy Patra was born in Kolkata 1974. He received his B.F.A 2003 and M.F.A 2005 from Kala - Bhavana, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan. He has undertaken many shows and participated in several workshops across the country.  In most of his works he locates a figure, in most cases a human figure into a large horizon with an occasional introduction of an object or a motif. The body in question is interestingly treated like a landscape as well, spread vertically or horizontally across the picture space. The body of the subject is always treated in a transparent manner, like a projection or a trace where images from cultural history are inscribed over its surface. As a result, we come across what one may call a doubled inscription, the body inscribing itself into space and history, and the form of signs, inscribed over the body. The play of inscriptions therefore creates a sense of immateriality around his figures and we return unsure on whether they can be trusted as real or not.
